Gluteal Stretch Video

[MUSIC PLAYING]
This is Dr. Sherri Stone from Biospine Institute. Today we're going to learn how to stretch the glute muscles or the butt muscles. Our butt muscles are a big muscle group in the back of us. And they're really important because they help us stand up tall. They also move our hips. So there's a lot of different ways to stretch them. So one way that I like to show patients is sit on a chair. Sit up nice and tall. Take one leg. Cross it over the opposite knee. Your back should not round and your shoulders should be erect. You are going to lean forward as far as you can without rounding the back. You should feel a stretch up in the back of the thigh. Hold this stretch for 20 seconds, up to a minute.
Another way to stretch the glute muscles is laying down.
Cross one ankle over the opposite knee. You can pull this up and hold. If that's too difficult, you can just pull the knee up towards your chest. You should feel the stretch in the back of the thigh on the butt. Hold this stretch for 20 seconds, up to a minute. Having flexible glutes is really important to help keeping back pain away.
