What is The VIA Disc Procedure?

The VIA Disc NP Procedure (non-surgical) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to help people who suffer from tissue loss in discs due to age-related wear and tear.

Understanding the Problem:

Your spine is made up of bones (vertebrae) and between each vertebrae are intervertebral discs that act as a cushion against impact and provide flexibility to support the body’s ability to bend, twist, and rotate. Over time, these discs can wear out or get damaged also known as degenerative disc disease, causing pain, reduced mobility, and other issues.

What is the goal of The VIA Disc NP procedure?

The VIA Disc NP procedure aims to restore the function of the damaged disc by replacing the lost or damaged material inside the disc with a special gel. This special gel is derived through the use of an allograft. An allograft is tissue recovered from a human donor that is transferred to the patient. The VIA Disc NP consists of dehydrated disc material, mixed together with saline, delivered into your disc through an injection.

During the procedure, your physician will use fluoroscopy, a type of imaging scan that allows your physician to guide a spinal needle into your intervertebral disc. The VIA Disc NP allograft will be mixed together with saline and your physician will insert the needle through the skin and muscle and inject this gel-like substance into the center of the intervertebral disc.

The Procedure:

• Insertion of Needle: A doctor uses imaging (like X-ray or fluoroscopy) to guide a needle into the center of the damaged disc.

• Injection of Gel: Through this needle, the doctor injects a special gel, known as the NP (Nucleus Pulposus) filler. This gel is designed to mimic the natural material inside the disc, helping to restore its height and cushiony function.

After the Procedure:

• Recovery: Since it's minimally invasive, patients can go home the same day and can resume normal activities the next day.

• Results: The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and slow down the degeneration of the disc.

Who Can Benefit?

The VIA Disc NP procedure is typically recommended for people who have not found relief from other treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections, but who do not yet need major spine surgery.

In summary, the VIA Disc NP procedure is a modern approach to treating degenerative disc disease by replenishing the worn-out material inside a spinal disc with a gel that helps restore its function. This can relieve pain and improve quality of life with a relatively simple, low-risk procedure.
